A few years ago I made a social media post asking people what four artists they would choose for an all women teenage mutant ninja turtle crew. The answers were disappointing to say the least with many people listing famous works of art with women as the subject rather than female artists, like Mona Lisa for example.
For many (mostly sexist) reasons, women in the arts are erased from the popular canon. One of the best ways to combat this erasure is to publicly celebrate these women and learn more about them. This is a zine of women artists for Women’s History Month.
Who would your lady Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle artists crew be? My original list was: Kiki Smith, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Louise Bourgeois.
